This howto is based on https://bisco.org/notes/installing-and-running-signal-on-tails/

  • Tested on Tails 5.12

Let’s go.

  • Start a Tails with a Persistent Volume set with these options enabled (at least):
    • Persistent Folder
    • Additional Software
    • Dotfiles
  • When unlocking Persitence, set an [Administration Password|https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/startup_options/administration_password/]
  • Make sure [Additional Software|https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/additional_software/] and [Personal Data|https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/persistence/configure/#index1h2] are enabled in the Persistence settings
  • Install Flatpak:
    • Start Synaptic Package Manager
    • Click Reload on the top-left corner
    • When finished, click Search on the top-right corner and enter flatpak
    • Click on the line for which the column “Package” says “flatpak”
    • In the “Package” menu, click “Mark for installation”
    • Click the Apply button
    • When the Additional Software notification appears, choose if you want to automatically install flatpak when starting Tails (it will install it only when Persistence is unlocked). You will want that if you use Signal a lot in Tails
    • Quit Synaptic
